✨ Mentorship & Building Your Support Ecosystem
May 09, 2025
A grounded approach to growing your career through relationships that are reciprocal, flexible, and aligned
You don’t have to do this alone.
And you were never meant to.
So many people talk about mentorship like it’s a golden ticket—“Just find a mentor and everything will fall into place.”
But the truth is: that mentorship is just one part of a broader ecosystem of support.
Your career will grow faster—and feel more meaningful—when you’re surrounded by people who believe in you, stretch you, and walk beside you at different stages.
PART 1 – Know Your “Why” for Mentorship
Don’t look for a mentor just because you’re supposed to.
Get honest about what you’re actually seeking.
For me, the turning point came during a financial crisis.
I realized I had no safety net. No one to ask for help.
That experience shifted everything—and it’s why I now prioritize mentorship and mutual support, not just for growth, but for resilience.
Ask yourself:
- What kind of guidance or support do I need right now?
- Is it emotional, strategic, professional, or personal?
- Do I need clarity? Advocacy? Skill-building? Confidence?
Your answers will help you seek support that’s aligned—not just aspirational.
PART 2 – Mentorship Isn’t Always One Person
You don’t need one “perfect mentor” who does it all.
In fact, it’s much more sustainable to build a support constellation—a group of people who each bring different strengths.
Build your constellation by asking:
- Who challenges me to think bigger?
- Who gives me grounded feedback?
- Who do I turn to when I’m unsure or stuck?
- Who models the kind of career or energy I aspire to?
Sometimes your “mentor” is a former manager.
Sometimes it’s a peer in another industry.
Sometimes it’s a podcast host, a book, or a teacher you’ve never met.
This reframes mentorship as accessible and abundant—not limited or intimidating.
PART 3 – Be Courageous and Persistent (With Respect)
Reaching out can feel awkward, especially if you’re just starting out or feel like you have nothing to offer.
But people want to help—when the ask is clear, respectful, and aligned.
When reaching out to someone:
- Share why you admire their work or leadership
- Ask a specific question, not just “Can I pick your brain?”
- Keep it short and human
- Offer something in return if you can (a resource, connection, thoughtful follow-up)
Don’t worry if you don’t get a response right away.
Persistence matters more than perfection.
I’ve found that most meaningful mentorships started from one kind, thoughtful, specific message—and a gentle follow-up a few weeks later.
PART 4 – The Hidden Power of Peer Mentorship
People often overlook peer support because they’re chasing someone “above them.”
But the people one step ahead of you are often the most helpful.
They remember what it’s like to be where you are.
They know how to navigate the exact challenges you’re facing.
Try:
👉🏽 Forming a learning or accountability group
👉🏽 Swapping “weekly wins and blocks” with a peer
👉🏽 Collaborating on a project, portfolio, or workshop
👉🏽 Co-working sessions or peer coaching
These connections grow into deep trust.
They become the people who advocate for you behind closed doors.
And someday—you’ll do the same for them.
PART 5 – Join Professional and Community Spaces
Sometimes support doesn’t come from individuals—it comes from the rooms you enter.
Look for:
- Slack groups or Discord communities in your field
- Local meetups, retreats, or workshops
- Mentorship platforms like ADPList, Lunchclub, or Women in Tech spaces
- Industry events where people gather to learn, not just to sell
Show up as you are. Ask thoughtful questions.
Offer your insight or story when invited.
The goal isn’t to network in the transactional sense.
It’s to root into a larger field of connection, creativity, and belonging.
PART 6 – Embrace “Digital Mentors”
If in-person or 1:1 mentorship feels out of reach, try this:
✅ Choose 2–3 people you admire.
✅ Read or watch everything they put out for a month.
✅ Take notes. Reflect. Integrate.
This could be:
- Podcast hosts
- Authors
- YouTubers, course creators, teachers
- People on LinkedIn or Substack whose thinking inspires you
They might not know you—but your relationship with their work is still powerful.
Sometimes, digital mentors become real-world collaborators later on.
But even if they don’t—you’ve grown.
PART 7 – Follow Up & Stay Connected (Genuinely)
The most overlooked part of mentorship?
Staying in a relationship.
A single call or coffee doesn’t build a support system.
What does:
- Following up to say thank you
- Sending a quick update a few months later
- Sharing how their advice helped you
- Reaching out again with a thoughtful reflection or win
Let people know you value the connection.
Not in a performative way—but in an intentional one.
These micro-moments build long-term relationships rooted in respect and mutual care.
PART 8 – Pay It Forward (Even If You’re Early)
You don’t need to be 10 years ahead to support someone else.
➡️ If you’re one step ahead, share your story.
➡️ If someone asks for advice, take 15 minutes.
➡️ If you have a platform, use it to uplift someone else’s work.
This isn’t about being a guru.
It’s about building the kind of ecosystem you wished existed when you started.
Reflection Prompts:
- Who do I feel safe asking for help or insight?
- What do I need most from my support network right now—strategy, belief, clarity, energy?
- Where have I been holding back from reaching out—and what’s the story behind that hesitation?
- Who could I support, uplift, or connect with this month?
Energetic Practice: Receiving Support
✅ Close your eyes.
✅ Place one hand on your heart, one on your belly.
✅ Breathe slowly.
Say to yourself:
“I am safe to be supported.
I am worthy of connection.
I give, and I receive.
I build a network rooted in honesty, generosity, and trust.”
Repeat as often as needed.
Support doesn’t make you weak.
It makes you strong, seen, and sustained.
Closing Thought:
You don’t need to wait to be chosen.
You don’t need to find one perfect mentor.
You’re allowed to build your own village.
To reach out with clarity.
To create a connection on your terms.
To receive what you once didn’t know how to ask for.
And to become the person someone else is searching for, too.
